Cross stitches are ideal for filling in the background, design elements, emphasizing borders or stitching flower motifs.

There are just a few things to remember when working cross stitch:

  • On a mono canvas you must cross each stitch as you go so that you don't distort the canvas.
  • Depending on your canvas count, you might need a thicker or thinner yarn to fill the canvas wholes.
  • Consistency in the direction of the stitches does matter.

You have probably noticed that I have used two different colors in some of the stitch diagrams.  Using two different yarn colors will create a very different stitch effect than using monocolor.

If you are up for a challenge, use different weight or strand of yarn with some metallic thread thrown in.  You won't believe how it will completely change the impact or the effect of the stitch.

Experiment with using different gauge of needlepoint canvas.  You will find that some gauges will deliver a better finish with different weight or strands of yarn.

I Hope your were able to find a stitch to your liking from these 68 cross stitch variation diagrams.  They are certainly ideal for any type of canvas work.

Feel like experimenting a little?  Combine your cross stitches with some straight stitches, leaf stitches or diagonal stitches on your needlepoint canvas.

I would also recommend that you check out ANG's (American Needlepoint Guild) "stitch of the month" page for interesting needlepoint stitch alternatives.

If you are looking for great gift ideas, check out the top needlepoint books.  The books listed contain plenty of patterns and how to tips to create your next project.

Share it with your friends and encourage them to try a few new stitches.

Cheers!
